During the Bloomfield Town Council meeting, October 16, the winners of the 2024 Bloomfield Beautification Committee (BBC) Notable Landscape competition were recognized for their contribution to the town’s environment and quality of life. In the photo (top) the winners who attended the meeting show proudly their awards. Members of the committee on the right in green celebrate with them.
Mayor Wong congratulated Joan Rosemond (second row, left) who accepted the award for her late husband Horace and grandson Zaquwon Johnson. Horace who passed away July 23 this year was an avid gardener who loved to plant beautiful gardens every year always including a colorful row of hibiscus flowers and giant green elephant ears in his landscape design. His grandson kept the gardens, planted, growing and healthy when Horace was no longer able to do the physical labor required. His yard was so meticulously kept, strangers would often stop and ask him for advice. His property was fondly called “Disneyland” because of all the birds who resided in the many birdhouses atop his fence and the picturesque landscaping. In the photo on the right (Horace is seen enjoying his garden in 2020.) At the time he had an open box truck located in his driveway where he had a “man” cave setup with pictures hung on the walls, rug on the floor, TV, fan, even a comfy sofa. No longer actively able to work in his yard, Horace could sit for hours on this sofa and supervise his grandson on what to take care of in his garden. His passion for gardening kept him going and invigorated!
